Mazda to Deliver 30 to 40 RX-8 RE Hydrogen Cars to HyNor

Mazda has signed a deal to deliver 30 to 40 of its RX-8 RE hydrogen dual fuel autos to the Norway HyNor Project. The Mazda RX-8 Renesis uses a rotary-powered internal combustion engine (ICE) that can accept either compressed hydrogen or gasoline to power the auto.

The HyNor Project is Norway’s version of the “Hydrogen Highway” with seven H2 refueling stations being built between Stavanger and Oslo. The HyNor highway includes 350 miles of treacherous roads with extreme elevation and temperature changes along the way. The HyNor Project is one way in which Norway is attempting to conform to the Kyoto Treaty.

The memorandum of understanding between Mazda and HyNor will last for 3 years with an option to continue. The Mazda RX-8 Renesis was there for the grand opening of Norway’s first hydrogen fueling station in Stavanger in August of 2006.
